Josh Bakehorn's Homemade Electric Guitar  ~

    Progress Pictures Page Two:

Note: Originally, I had planned on making this guitar a cross between Brian May's Red Special and the classic Les Paul, with 2 humbucker pickups and my own electronics design. I've since chosen to utilize 3 Burns Trisonics pickups, essentially making this a non-tremolo version of the Red Special. Most of the pictures here reflect the former design, but I will post pictures with the new design as things progress.

Nice knobs with abalone tops to match the fretmarkers!

I shaped the headstock myself. I will replace the buttons of the Grover mini-locking tuners with Schaller pearloid ones, and make a new truss rod cover in white pearloid.

This is the guitar as I had originally planned it to be with humbuckers and Les Paul bridge. I laid the pickups on a paper pickguard to check how things would look.

My guitar next to the Burns Brian May.

Body is routed for humbucker pickups and tailpiece, and the humbuckers, paper pickguard and controls put in place to check the appearance.

Finally able to put some strings on the guitar, it plays and sounds amazing! It has great action and intonation and a marvelous, rich hollow-body volume and tone.

Added the side veneer and started to sand and refine it before adding the binding.

Here are my new Burns TriSonics and the roller bridge mentioned on the first page. I like the sound of the TriSonics pickups so much I changed my plans to use them instead of the humbuckers I had bought.

The guitar is close to being finished. All I have left to do is route the binding channel and add the binding, apply grain filler and sanding sealer, and then paint and gloss coat the body and neck, buff and polish it and she's done! Of course, all that will take a lot longer to actually do than it sounds. But it's all fun work!

I will be doing some design work on the back of the guitar in India ink and pearloid, and I'll be designing my own logo for the headstock; something artistic and tasteful.

Let me know what you think of my guitar; I'd love to talk about it, so feel free to email me!
