Josh Bakehorn

Here is some music I composed, performed, and recorded. I play all the parts on all the songs. I used a simple 4-track recorder. These are basically crude demos of everything, so things are a little rough on the edges, etc., but they stand as decent examples of some things I can do. This is just a small sample of some of my songs. These recordings date from 1997 to 1999.

You will need RealPlayer G2 to hear these. I hate that these are in mono; it doesn't do the original stereo mixes any justice. However, you will be able to buy CDs of my first official album, professionally recorded, here in September of 2001.

Josh's Indian Music Sample
I play Sitar, Esraj, and Tabla in this recording. This is sort of a generic example of Indian music. It's kind of a sloppy recording, so it's not a particularly great example of my talents, nor is it a particularly great example of Indian music. It is, however, a neat little example of how these instruments sound together.

I Have a Home
I play Keyboard, Bass, Drums, Sitar, and Vocals in this. I hate talking about what songs are supposed to mean, but I will do so anyway. This is basically about how terrible the world can seem and how little the people all around you seem to care about anything, but yet you still have a place somewhere in this world. Just have a listen; it's a pretty song.

Loodalie!
In this song, I play Keyboard, Bass, and Drums. It's a fun exploration of stream of consciousness music.

Summer Dream
I play Acoustic Guitar, Bass, Keyboard, Drums, E-Bowed Guitar, and Vocals. A song describing the flights of passions and dreams in the summer nights of youth.

Sweety
For this song, I play Ukulele, Esraj, Sitar, Minced Onion Maracas, and Harmonium. It's a sweet instrumental; very simple. I named it "Sweety" after my cat, Sweety, would always sit in front of my Esraj when I was first composing this song. He seemed to really enjoy hearing me play this. He would always come over when I would start to play this song and would ususally sit so close that I had to move away just to be able to bow the Esraj properly. I think maybe he just loves the soothing melody of the Esraj's voice. Who wouldn't?! See the picture at the bottom...

Hello, My Baby!
This is one I didn't write. As of 2000, this song is 101 years old. This isn't the complete song; just a short sample. I play an Authentic Acoustic Tack Piano, Drums, Ukulele, and Vocals. I really love Ragtime music, so I had a lot of fun doing this.

I would love to hear what you think of these songs. Feel free to email me your comments and questions about any of this. I will put more of my songs here soon, so check back often.

About the recordings:

As I said earlier, these are basically just crude demos of a small sample of some of my work. These weren't recorded on professional equipment, so don't expect to hear professional recordings. They are pretty darn good, though, engineering-wise, considering what I had to work with. I used only a Tascam 4-Track Mini-Disc recorder.

I play a multitude of instruments: piano, guitar, bass, drum set and miscellaneous percussion, ukulele, sitar, tabla, esraj, tambura, harmonium, mandolin, etc., and I sing. I am self taught on everything except piano, for which I had a couple years of lessons. I have a good knowledge of a wide variety of musical styles including opera, ragtime, Indian classical, Western classical, rock, musical theatre, meditative, and others. Thank you for your interest.
